How long does a background check company have to fix a report if they mixed me with someone else?
I disputed my background check because it mixed me with someone else, but the company told me it could take “up to 30 days.” Meanwhile, my job offer is on pause, and every day feels like I’m getting closer to losing it.
Under the FCRA, background check companies generally have about 30 days to complete a reinvestigation after receiving your dispute. But that doesn’t mean they can ignore evidence, rubber-stamp the error, or drag their feet when real harm is happening.
If the company:
- Delays without investigating,
- Ignores proof you submitted,
- Fails to issue a corrected report,
They may be violating the law. And if the delay causes job loss or other harm, that can increase your potential damages.
