Personal Property Insurance Companies

What sort of information is your personal property insurance company relying on to determine your insurance rates?
Every company wants to minimize its risks. Personal property insurance companies know all about risk and use background check reports and consumer credit reports to minimize their risks. But when those reports are inaccurate, the impact and cost to you can be huge. Find your company on our comprehensive list and learn what you can do about it.

Technology has made storing, accessing, transferring, distributing, compiling, and selling a person’s personal data a common occurrence. Industries that previously couldn’t do background checks, credit checks, driving history checks, and rental history checks on potential customers due to cost can now run all those checks and easily get reports on potential customers.

Personal property insurance companies are one of those industries that now regularly do background checks.

A personal property insurance company or personal property insurance agency is a company that insures your personal possessions. Personal property insurance companies provide financial protection against loss or damage due to things like theft, fire, vandalism, or natural disasters. People seeking personal property coverage are often renters seeking peace of mind for their belongings. Anyone applying to obtain insurance for their personal belongings must often submit to a background check. They then wait for approval and, if approved, their insurance rates. Too often, background check errors result in increased rates or the outright denial of insurance coverage.

Information on Personal Property Insurance Companies

Many of the top property insurance companies and best-rated property insurance companies offer insurance bundling. Insurance bundling involves combining multiple policies, like auto and home insurance, with one provider to simplify management and often secure discounted premiums. In such instances, a property and casualty insurance agency might offer life, automobile, personal property, and homeowners insurance. In such cases, a background check will include credit history, driving history, and rental history. They do this to:

  • Evaluate the risk level associated with insuring an individual or entity.
  • Determine appropriate premium rates based on the risk profile.
  • Identify and prevent potential fraudulent activities or claims.
  • Ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements regarding policy issuance.
  • Gather accurate information for underwriting decisions, ensuring policies are issued based on correct data.
  • Assess the applicant’s claims history, which might indicate future risk.
  • Evaluate financial stability and responsibility, especially for insurance policies like life or health insurance.
  • Identify any criminal activities that might affect the policy terms or eligibility.
  • For auto insurance, verify driving licenses and check for any violations or suspensions.
  • For property insurance, assess the condition and value of the insured property.

As credit report attorneys, we see the consequences of errors in background checks too often. Consumers who are denied insurance suffer the financial losses that insurance coverage is designed to prevent. Additionally, they suffer mental and emotional damage, anxiety, reputational damage, and other non-economic damages. Those approved for insurance but with rates based on erroneous information in background check reports pay higher rates. Over a lifetime, higher monthly insurance rates can really add up.

Even the most prominent and largest property insurance companies and property insurance company ratings leaders can engage background check companies that provide inaccurate reports. While the credit reporting agencies are likely liable for the inaccurate information on their reports, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) also imposes requirements on the property insurance companies who use those reports. Property insurance companies can also face liability if those FCRA-mandated requirements are not met.
