Checkr Background Check: What It Shows, How Far Back It Goes, and Is It Legit

A Checkr background check is a report employers and gig platforms use to review criminal records, driving history, work experience, or other information relevant to a job. Checkr is a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), so it has legal responsibilities for accuracy and investigating disputes. If its report contains an error, you have the right to challenge it.

Checkr Background Checks at a Glance

  • Your report may include more than criminal records. Depending on the job, the employer may also request driving history, employment verification, education checks, or other screenings.
  • There is no universal seven-year cutoff. How far back Checkr can report information depends on the type of record and applicable law.
  • Checkr prepares the report; the employer or platform makes the decision. A flagged record does not automatically mean you have failed the background check.
  • You have a right to review the report before an employer rejects you because of it. The employer must first provide a copy of the report and a summary of your FCRA rights.
  • Challenging a reporting error costs nothing. You can dispute someone else's records, incorrect case outcomes, and other inaccurate or incomplete information directly with Checkr.

What a Checkr Background Check Is and Why Employers and Gig Platforms Rely on It

A Checkr background check is a screening report that brings together the records and verifications an employer or platform has ordered to assess someone for a particular role. If you are wondering what is a Checkr background check in practice, it is one consolidated report built from several separate searches.

Companies use Checkr because searching courts, checking driving records, and verifying work history individually takes time. Its platform brings those tasks into one system and connects with hiring software, which is useful when an employer is processing many applications.

You usually encounter Checkr after a company asks you to authorize screening and provide identifying information. Checkr prepares the report; the company requesting it decides whether to hire you or allow you to work on its platform. That distinction matters whenever something goes wrong: a reporting error needs to be addressed with Checkr, while questions about the hiring decision belong with the company making it.

Which Employers and Industries Use Checkr

Checkr employment verification and other screening services are used across staffing, transportation, delivery, healthcare, retail, hospitality, and technology, as well as by major gig platforms.

The job determines what gets checked:

  • a delivery company may want criminal and driving records;
  • a staffing agency may need to confirm where you worked and when;
  • a healthcare employer may add professional license verification or a sanctions search.

Two applicants screened by Checkr can receive completely different reports because their employers ordered different services.

What a Checkr Background Check Shows

What a Checkr background check shows depends on the searches ordered, with possible results including criminal history, driving records, employment and education verification, and other information relevant to the role. If you are asking what a Checkr background check looks for in your case, the answer is whatever the employer selected and nothing else.

Checkr background check packages can combine several services. A Checkr criminal background check does not, by itself, verify your résumé or include a drug test. Those are separate screenings.

Here is a quick reference table of Checkr background check components:

Report componentWhat it looks for or verifies
SSN traceNames and address history associated with the Social Security number supplied, helping identify where and under which names to search.
National criminal searchPotential criminal records in a database compiled from multiple sources; it is not a search of every courthouse.
County, state, and federal criminal searchesCriminal records from the court systems or repositories searched, including reportable charges, convictions, and case outcomes.
Sex offender registry searchPotential matches in sex offender registries that must be checked against the applicant's identifying information.
Motor vehicle report (MVR)License status, driving violations, and other available driving-history information.
Employment verificationPast employers, dates of employment, and available job-title information.
Education verificationSchools attended and degrees or credentials earned, within the scope of the verification ordered.
Professional license or sanctions checksLicense details or relevant exclusions and disciplinary records, often for regulated roles.
Drug screeningResults from the test ordered for the position, collected through a separate testing process.

For criminal records, the outcome deserves particular attention. An arrest, a pending charge, a dismissal, and a conviction describe different events. A report that gets the charge right but the outcome wrong can still give an employer a misleading picture.

How Far Back a Checkr Background Check Goes

How far back a Checkr background check goes depends on the record, applicable law, and the job; there is no seven-year cutoff that applies to every search. Federal law generally limits older adverse non-conviction information to seven years but does not apply that limit to criminal convictions. Exceptions include certain employment reports for jobs expected to pay at least $75,000 annually, and state rules can be stricter. Our detailed guide on how far back does Checkr go covers the differences record by record.

How Long a Checkr Check Takes and What Clear, Consider, Pending, and Suspended Mean

Many Checkr background checks finish within one to three business days, according to Checkr, while searches that need additional court research or verification can take a week or longer.

A school may need to respond to an education request, or a researcher may need to obtain records from a courthouse. Your Candidate Portal estimate helps you follow the progress, but a longer wait does not, on its own, mean the report contains negative information.

The labels below are what Checkr uses to show the progress of your background check and whether the completed report contains information the employer or platform needs to review.

LabelWhat it means
ClearThe report is complete and contains no items requiring consideration.
ConsiderThe completed report contains information the company needs to review before making its decision.
PendingCheckr is still processing the searches in the report.
SuspendedProcessing has paused, often because information or documentation is missing.

Some Checkr tools also display a Review assessment when findings need evaluation. Neither Consider nor Review automatically means you have been rejected.

How Checkr Gathers and Matches Your Data, and Where Automation Creates Errors

Checkr uses identifying details such as your name and date of birth to match criminal records, while address history helps determine which locations need to be searched.

The GAO describes the SSN trace and name-based national criminal search as starting points for further research. A potential match can lead to a county search to check the underlying case and obtain current information. Supplying your Social Security number does not mean every court record is matched using that number.

Inaccuracies can arise at several stages. Automated searches extract data quickly, but speed cannot supply missing details, such as the identifiers needed to tell apart people with similar names. Centralized databases may also hold outdated records that never received a later court update, such as a dismissal.

NCLC research documents these weaknesses across the screening industry, including incomplete identifiers, data passed through intermediaries, and databases that are not updated often enough. Accuracy depends on how the information is gathered, matched, and checked before it reaches the employer.

How Accurate Is a Checkr Background Check? What the Error Data Shows

How accurate a Checkr background check is depends on matching records to the right person and reporting what actually happened in each case. Existing studies illustrate the weak points in background screening, but none of them quantifies an exact error rate across all Checkr reports.

One serious problem is a false positive, such as a report attaching someone else's criminal record to you. Other mistakes make your own history look worse than it is. NCLC's 2023 report Digital Denials documents mismatched records, misdemeanors classified as felonies, duplicate entries, and missing case outcomes. A charge reported without its dismissal leaves the person reviewing it with an incomplete, damaging picture.

A study published in Criminology in 2024 gives a more concrete measure. Researchers compared official state records with private background checks for 101 people with criminal histories in New Jersey and found at least one false-positive error in the federally regulated background checks of 61 participants, about 60% of the sample. Here, a false positive meant a charge appearing in the private report but not in the official state record.

CFPB complaint data shows how often incorrect information drives people to seek help. Its November 2022 tenant-screening report recorded approximately 26,700 complaints from January 2019 through September 2022, including more than 17,200 about incorrect information. These figures concern tenant screening across providers, not employment screening or Checkr specifically.

A low dispute count does not prove that reports are accurate, either. NCLC's Broken Records Redux explains that some people never obtain their reports, while others spot mistakes but do not dispute them.

For your own Checkr report, check whether each record belongs to you and whether the charge, dates, and final outcome are correct. Those details matter more to your application than any overall accuracy claim.

Is Checkr Legit and Safe: What Reddit, Trustpilot, and BBB Reviews Say

The short answer to is Checkr legit and is Checkr safe is yes: Checkr is a legitimate background screening company used by established employers and platforms, and it publishes security and privacy policies describing how it handles sensitive personal information. If you have seen the question phrased as is Checkr background check legit or is Checkr background service legit, the answer is the same.

A screening invitation is a normal part of applying for work. Checkr itself is not a scam, but scammers can use its name in fake emails. If you suspect a Checkr background check scam, confirm the request with the employer before sharing personal information, and reach the Candidate Portal through Checkr's official website rather than a link in the message. A familiar company name in an email is not enough to establish that the message is authentic.

Public Checkr background check reviews describe experiences an applicant may recognize:

SourceThemes in the reviews and complaints examined
RedditChanging completion estimates, uncertainty about start dates, and difficulty finding out what is holding up a report.
TrustpilotPositive comments about ease of use, alongside complaints about delays, inaccurate information, and support.
BBBDisputed records, identifying-information problems, and delays affecting work, with responses from Checkr to many complaints.

These experiences highlight common frustrations, but they are not a statistically representative survey and do not prove every claim. What they do show is that even a legitimate company produces errors, which is why reviewing your own report still matters.

The Checkr Errors That Can Cost People Jobs

Checkr report errors that can threaten a job include another person's criminal history, a wrong case outcome, duplicate offenses, and inaccurate driving information that makes an applicant appear ineligible.

  • Someone else's record appears under your name. A similar name or birth date can lead to a false match.
  • The case outcome is missing or wrong. A dismissed charge may appear unresolved, or a report may incorrectly describe a conviction.
  • One incident appears more than once. Duplicate entries make a person's history look more extensive than it is.
  • Records that should have been excluded remain visible. These can include sealed, expunged, or legally outdated information.
  • The driving section reports the wrong license status or violation. A driver may lose access to work over information that does not reflect the actual record.

The FTC and CFPB have both documented these kinds of accuracy problems in background screening.

Your Rights Under the FCRA When Checkr Reports About You

When Checkr prepares a background report about you, the FCRA governs how your information is collected, shared, and used. It also gives you specific ways to examine the report and challenge errors.

  • The report before the decision. Before rejecting you, firing you, or denying a promotion based wholly or partly on the report, an employer generally must provide a copy of that report and the FCRA Summary of Rights. This pre-adverse-action step lets you review the information and respond before the decision becomes final.
  • A free dispute. You can dispute inaccurate or incomplete information directly with Checkr at no charge.
  • A 30-day investigation. Checkr must consider your evidence and generally complete its investigation within 30 days of receiving your dispute. Up to 15 additional days may apply if you supply relevant information during that period, unless the disputed item has already been found inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable.
  • Corrections and written results. Inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable entries must be promptly modified or deleted as appropriate. You generally must receive written results and a report reflecting the outcome within five business days of completion.

Our guide to FCRA violations explains these protections in more detail.

What to Do if You Failed a Checkr Background Check Over Wrong Information

If incorrect information on a Checkr background check has put your job or platform access at risk, save the report and raise the error with both Checkr and the company relying on it.

  1. Keep the report and notices. Save the original version, relevant emails, and any stated response deadline.
  2. Tell the employer about the error and ask it to delay the decision. Identify the incorrect entry and explain that you are disputing it with Checkr. Ask the employer to wait for the investigation results before deciding; many will.
  3. Dispute the entry with Checkr and document the loss. Keep supporting records, your dispute confirmation, and evidence of a withdrawn offer, delayed start, or missed earnings.

Our guide to Checkr wrong information covers what to do when a report has already disrupted your work.

How to Dispute an Error on Your Checkr Background Check

You can dispute an error on your Checkr background check through the Candidate Portal or directly with Checkr, without paying a fee for the investigation.

  1. Identify the incorrect entry. Provide records showing what needs to change.
  2. Save your submission and confirmation. Certified mail provides delivery proof for a written dispute.

See how to dispute a Checkr background check for the full step-by-step process.

When a Checkr Error Becomes an FCRA Violation You Can Sue For

You may have grounds to sue Checkr if unreasonable reporting procedures produced an inaccurate report, or if the company failed to reasonably investigate a dispute you submitted. An attorney can examine how the record was matched to you, what Checkr did after learning of the problem, and how the report affected your work. Our guide explains when you can sue Checkr.

Checkr Background Checks for Uber, DoorDash, Lyft, Instacart, and Shipt

Uber, DoorDash, Lyft, Instacart, and Shipt use Checkr for at least some screening, although each platform sets its own requirements and decides who can begin or continue working.

PlatformWhat its published guidance says
UberCriminal and motor vehicle checks are part of screening; Checkr is one of its providers, and Uber may need review time after a report is complete.
DoorDashCheckr processes reports, while DoorDash reviews findings and decides eligibility. A completed report does not necessarily mean approval. Our guide answers does DoorDash use Checkr in more detail.
LyftCheckr handles criminal background checks; Lyft identifies a separate provider for its DMV checks. See our Lyft background check guide.
InstacartInitial criminal and motor vehicle screening involves partners including Checkr, and background checks are refreshed.
ShiptCheckr is its identified vendor for criminal background checks and motor vehicle reports.

If you are facing deactivation of a driver or courier account because of a background check, you may need two separate steps: dispute the incorrect information with Checkr, and appeal the deactivation directly to the platform. Check each notice for its deadline and instructions. Submitting a Checkr dispute does not automatically submit a platform appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Checkr offers employment credit checks, but your employer must order that service; it is not automatically included just because the company requested a criminal background check. An employment credit report can show accounts, payment history, and balances, but it does not include a credit score. State and local laws may restrict its use.

Checkr offers an optional social media screening service that examines publicly available activity and adverse news when an employer includes it in the package. Checkr says it does not require candidates to supply social media usernames and that trained analysts review flagged reports. A standard criminal-record search does not include this service.

You can access a free copy of your completed Checkr report through the Candidate Portal without paying for a new screening. Reports completed more than 12 months ago are not available in the portal. If the report you need is missing, request it directly from Checkr.

No. A Checkr employment background check does not lower your credit score, even when an employer orders an employment credit-history search, because that inquiry is treated as a soft inquiry. Criminal and driving-record searches do not involve applying for credit at all.
